New Community MX Articles 11:40 AM
Today, Community MX celebrates its 250th article. That's a lot of content! Congratulations to everyone who works so hard at CMX.
I just completed a two-part CMX tutorial entitled "Manipulating Images with Jimg." In Part 1, you learn to use jimg.cfc, the ColdFusion component from DRK 4, to create a thumbnail generator. In Part 2, which comes out Thursday, Jimg is the basis for a photo gallery application. Part 2 covers a lot of ground: you learn how to dynamically display the contents of image folders using <cfdirectory>, how to upload files using <cffile>, and how to use Jimg's loadByFile method to resize uploaded images and create borders and captions.

The Wait Is Over 1:26 AM
Well, folks, it's finally here. Macromedia has just posted free trial downloads of all the new Studio MX 2004 products, including Dreamweaver MX 2004, Flash MX 2004, Fireworks MX 2004, and Freehand MX (those new titles just roll off the tongue, don't they?). You'll be pleased to know that the Flash trial enables you to switch back and forth between the Standard and Professional versions, so you can decide if Flash Pro is worth the extra 100 simoleons (I think it is).
In addition, there are a number of new '04 articles in Macromedia's Developer Center:
- Data Binding in Macromedia Flash MX Professional 2004 by Aral Balkan
- Designing with CSS in Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 by Drew McLellan
- Building a Streaming Video Presentation by Andrew Guldman
- Building the FooterNav Component by Andreas Heim
Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines...

Community MX 5:32 PM
I'm pleased to announce that I have joined the talented team at Community MX. "Porting Pollster to SQL Server" is the first of many articles I'll be writing for them. This free tutorial explains how to migrate Pollster to SQL Server, and even includes a SQL script that automatically generates the database and tables.
I've had access to the content on CommunityMX.com for about a month, and I've barely scratched the surface of what it has to offer. Take it from me, Community MX is the best source of information about Macromedia products on the Internet. Right now, there's a series of free articles about what's new in MX 2004. In addition, Community MX has some killer extensions such as the Remoting Tester Panel for Dreamweaver and Text Format Suite a Knowledge Base, and the CommunityMX Forums. A subscription is $25/month, but you can save by subscribing quarterly ($20/month) or annually ($200/year). Even at $25/month, it's a bargain: for half the price of most computer books, you get access to two new articles per day. Plus, as a subscriber, you get guaranteed support something not every computer book can offer. Not to mention you get articles on a wide variety of subjects not just Macromedia software, but a whole range of web design and development issues. (I know this sounds like an infomercial, but I'm really excited about this.)
The contributors to Community MX include some of the best Macromedia authors around:
- Tom Muck - Flash Remoting: The Definitive Guide
- Ray West - Dreamweaver MX: The Complete Reference
- Branden Hall - OOP with ActionScript
- Kim Cavanaugh - Fireworks MX: A Beginner's Guide
- Joel Martinez - ASP.NET Development with Dreamweaver MX
- Arman Danesh - Mastering ColdFusion MX
- Charlie Arehart - ColdFusion MX Bible
Truly, there's a ton of great content on CommunityMX.com. I've learned something from every article I've read. I hope you'll consider joining.
